The Top Trends At The Consumer Electronics Show

Here are our observations about the top trends at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We spent five days there checking out the gadgets, parties, and press conferences. Check out how well these trends match up against our predictions from before the show.

3-D TV in the home
. Some years, it’s hard to figure out the trends at CES. This year, it was easy because every big company talked about viewing 3-D movies, TV shows and games in the living room. Blame it on Avatar. The advocates include LG Electronics, Toshiba, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic, Sony, Intel, and Nvidia. Some of the companies gave 30 percent of their press conference airtime to 3-D. Nvidia had the best 3-D viewable images (as far as we saw) on a racing game. That’s because personal computers can use the best dedicated 3-D graphics hardware, making for more realism. Both Panasonic and Samsung unveiled a whole ecosystem of products from glasses to 3-D ready TVs.

Last year, the 3-D craze was just getting started. But the billion-dollar box office revenues of Avatar made made all of the difference. The movie’s 3-D experience is truly immersive, not formulaic. Another 50 3-D movies will be released in 2010. Movie theaters love them because they give people a reason to come to the theater, and because they can’t be pirated. But TV vendors love it because it will give consumers a reason to go back to stores, even after they’ve already bought their high-definition screens.

As good as this sounds, we’re not sure it’s going to be as big as HD TV itself. There are still lots of skeptics out there who won’t watch in 3-D because it gives them a headache. They’re not likely to pay extra for it. And it could be some time still before all of the 3-D ecosystem — with content, cameras, TVs, and glasses — are available in a lot of homes. We don’t expect every movie to be as good as Avatar, either. Samsung and Sharp may be able to boost the market some because they have technologies that can convert 2-D programs to 3-D on the fly. But 3-D is at least off to a good start in 2010 and it will trickle down from the theaters to homes in due time.

Tablets by the dozen. Apple is expected to launch a tablet computer at the end of the month. But everyone at CES wanted to show off their own cool designs first so that they won’t look like copycats. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer showed off three tablets in his keynote, including Hewlett-Packard’s tablet. But HP was very light on details, perhaps because it wants to wait to see what Apple launches. Most tablet makers would be wise to do the same. But the foundations were all there at CES: touchscreens, swipe controls, content such as eBooks, and chips from companies such as Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom and Marvell. Tablets have been around for a while, but the new ones should be much more responsive to touch commands. Of all of those who have models in the works, HP will likely be the best challenger to Apple, says Richard Doherty, analyst at the Envisioneering Group. That’s because HP has decades of experience with touchscreens, has a lot of TouchSmart computers already in the market, and has a big collection of touchscreen patents as well. We only wish we saw more of it in action.

New devices may bring e-books to the masses. It looks like both device-makers and publishers are expecting books to be a major part of the content on those tablets. After all, Microsoft’s Ballmer showed off the HP tablet’s touchscreen by accessing an Amazon Kindle application and flipping through a few pages of the bestselling novel Twilight. Meanwhile, Plastic Logic launched its Que e-book reader, which is one of the most impressive-looking devices in its market (it had better be, since the device is also substantially more expensive than Amazon’s Kindle).

With these devices, not to mention Apple set to announce its all-but-official tablet/e-book reader later this month, readers’ embrace of e-books as a complement or even replacement for physical books may ramp up dramatically in the next year. As that happens, the question is whether e-book readers can compete against fully-fledged tablets. Are the reader manufacturers in trouble? Will they have to make their devices more tablet-like to compete?

Oh, and the shift may not be limited traditional books — a startup called Graphic.ly, which was also demonstrated on-stage at Ballmer’s keynote, is developing a digital comic book reader and store.

Netbooks are getting more and more attractive. These machines make perfect sense with their smaller screens, low prices, and sole purpose of cruising the web. But the first generation of netbooks that came out about 18 months ago had return rates as high as 40 percent. They didn’t play games, choked on a lot of web sites, and were generally a lousy consumer experience. Despite that, netbooks are selling in the tens of millions and there were dozens of new models at the show. Now, with the newest generation of low-power technology, the category is no longer just a bunch of hype. The machines can live up to their billing. The latest Intel Atom chips give these 0 or so machines a lot of oomph to do tasks that once required full laptops. Toshiba’s new Toshiba Mini NB 350 has an 11 hour battery life. HP’s new Mini 5102 netbook has a touchscreen. About 33 million netbooks sold in 2009, and that should grow 20 percent in 2010, according to market researcher DisplaySearch. The category will get competition from smartbooks, which are hybrids of smart phones and netbooks, and perhaps e-book readers and tablets as well.

Everyone’s jumping on the app store band wagon, and they’re bringing plenty of devices. After Apple found big success with its iPhone/iPod Touch App Store, other smartphone makers followed suit. Now the model is moving to other devices, particularly those netbooks we mentioned. Intel announced AppUp, which netbook makers can customize to offer their own stores to customers. Samsung announced its store too, which appears to use AppUp technology. Netbooks seem like the obvious next step for this model, since they sit between the sophistication of a normal laptop and a smartphone. At the same time, you could see this as a blow for native apps over the “net” part of netbooks, since netbooks are supposed to be all about accessing the web, not downloading applications. Google has been the most vocal about this, declaring that “all apps are web apps” in its forthcoming netbook operating system, Chrome OS.

The vision isn’t limited to netbooks, but encompasses TVs, PCs, and other devices too. Samsung, in particular, promoted its apps’ cross-device capabilities. It’s not about TV apps, or phone apps. It’s about apps that work across all devices, storing your activity so that your behavior on one device carries over the others. As companies release new gadgets (see the tablet trend above) and old devices get web connected (see the TV trend below), these kinds of cross-device features will become more crucial.

New user interfaces abound. Ever since the iPhone and the Nintendo Wii debuted, the tech industry has been experimenting with new ways to control devices. Touchscreens have infiltrated lots of products, from Microsoft’s pricey Surface tables to everyday cell phones. At the show, Motorola debuted its Backflip phone with a touch surface in the back of a phone, allowing you to control the screen without obstructing your view of it. The iPhone’s accelerometers introduced the intuitive shake or tilt functions that add more nuance to your controls. Synaptics, meanwhile, showed what is possible by combining touch with other controls in its and Fuse and Scrybe demos. This should be quite useful for future phones and tablets.

Gesture controls are also taking a leap forward. Microsoft said it would launch Project Natal, which has camera-based sensors that can detect your full body movements, for the Xbox 360 in the fall of 2010. Sony was strangely silent about its rival technology debuting this spring. But companies such as GestureTek, Canesta and others showed off their own technologies for controlling TVs or other gear with gestures. It remains to be seen how well users will warm to these new control schemes, and how soon software takes advantage of it.

Mobile TV gets competitive. Qualcomm has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into its FloTV business. The company has acquired the spectrum it needs to broadcast mobile digital TV programming wirelessly to cell phones (including the iPhone) and its own FloTV handheld player. But now it has some competition from the Open Mobile Video Coaltion, which has passed a Mobile Digital TV standard. New devices based on the standard were shown at CES, but the battery life and usefulness are still lacking. While Qualcomm has a national network with a wide variety of programming, the Open Mobile group can so far only produce local digital TV programming in 30 cities. The Open Mobile group offers the service for free, while Qualcomm charges a subscription. Unlike the other trends, this one is still emerging and was evident in just a handful of booths. Like

Digital Book World Conference and Consumer Electronics Show: Past and Present

A number of conferences dealing with electronic technology occur on a regular basis. Two of these are the Digital Book World Conference and the Consumer Electronics Show.

The Digital Book World Conference, a conference on publishing and digital change, is for all book-publishing professionals. This includes senior management, editors, agents, marketers, digital strategists, and others. It is unique in that it helps publishers address business challenges created by digital change.

The first annual Digital Book World Conference took place in New York City January 26-27, 2010 at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers. Planners of the conference conceived the idea in June, put together the Conference Council in July, and drafted the initial program in August. They geared panels and talks towards the changing digital book business. It had three main themes: Evolving the Business Model, EBooks: Opportunity or Threat, and Marketing in the Digital Age. Topics discussed included management of digital rights, pricing of eBooks, and timing of eBook releases. The goal was to provide an outstanding program with expert speakers for attendees to takeaway practical ideas, and to include sponsors and exhibitors capable of offering appropriate tools for implementing the strategies individuals learned about at the conference.

Attendees were professionals from five continents representing more than 240 publishing companies including Amazon.com Digital, Barnes&Noble.com, Crown Publishing Group, Google, HarperCollins, Macmillan, National Geographic Society, Oxford University Press, Princeton University Press, Random House, as well as many others. Individuals from all areas of book acquisition, production, and distribution were present at the conference. Among them were CEOS, Senior Agents, Directors of Marketing & Sales, Editorial Directors, Directors of Strategic Partnerships, and Directors of Digital Assets.

The second annual conference, Digital Book World 2011, coming up January 24-26, will again be held at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in New York City. The theme this year is Managing Risks; Seizing Opportunities. On Monday, January 24, conference attendees can participate in three-hour workshops in the areas of eBook Design and Production, Content Strategy and Transmedia Development, and Direct-to-Consumer Marketing and Sales.

Planning for this year’s conference is well ahead of last year’s schedule. As they plan for the upcoming conference organizers need to predict what the relevant digital change questions will be and what will be relevant to the target audience of book-publishing professionals in January 2011.

The Conference Council, a group of about 30 made up of CEOs, representatives from large and small publishing houses, retailers, digital strategists, retailers, and independent leaders, will plan the programs and choose speakers who will address the relevant issues and problems that trade publishers are facing as they move into digital publishing. Not only is the technology of e-readers progressing rapidly, but e-Ink technology is improving alongside it opening new horizons for digital reading. According to the review “What’s Next in e-Ink Technology“, the new generation color E Ink products are certainly crisper and offer better resolution and color reproduction that anything else seen to date and we expect to see electronic ink begin to compete with LCD displays (Digital Book Readers).

Another conference, the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held each year in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) puts on this technology-related trade show, which is not open to the public. Attendees must have a professional affiliation with consumer electronics. The CEA reinvests all profits from the show. They go towards such things as industry promotion and services, technical training and education, development of engineering standards, and legislative advocacy.

Originally, in 1967, CES was held in New York. Then in 1978, it started being held twice a year. In 1998 the show once again changed and went back to the once a year format. The CES gained popularity in 2004 after Comdex was cancelled.

The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, held January 7-10, had an attendance of more than 120,000. The most impressive e-book readers at the show were Skiff Reader and Plastic Logic Que proReader – touchscreen devices with integrated 3G. Also at that show, several companies announced 3D-compatible HDTVs and four companies announced standalone 3D Blu-ray players. Intel demonstrated a new Wireless Display technology (WiDi), and Motorola introduced the new Backflip Smartphone.

The next CES, January 6-9, 2011, will have more than 300 conference sessions covering every aspect of the consumer electronics industry. The full conference lineup will be available October 1, 2010.

2011 Ford Fiesta Hatchback SES Review

2011 Ford Fiesta Hatchback SES Review

Today I will talk about the new 2011 Ford Fiesta SES. This is a new Ford small car that packs in a big way and the economy. Fiesta is the name that some may remember from years ago, when Ford produced a small car of the same name that was not what many liked. I remember the car as boxy and generally unattractive car economy.
The new Fiesta is a total different animal and a vehicle that will appeal to users looking for style and fun as the car that is economical. Fiesta Im checking out the SES hatchback is loaded in a nice maroon color called Candy Red Metallic. The car has leather seats, 1.6l TI-VCT I4 DOHC Duratech Power Shift 6-speed automatic transmission.
Gallery 8 photos

My test vehicle was equipped with a comfort update package including heated front seats, chrome belt molding line, central locking with remote start and keyless entry and a few other fast packet 301A that spec 5 added to the base price. Other features include the Ford Sync system, power windows, central locking, satellite radio, and 16-inch premium wheels. The total sticker price of the option the car as tested is ,555 base price for the SES to ,120. Less with early versions of the Fiesta as low as ,320. I can? Believing that you can get a new car in this price today, I spent more than adapting cars in the past.
All information outside of the car and if you do not do it? T, grasp this may not be interested no matter how well maintained the car and what kind of fuel you get. Women who had seen the Fiesta and it unanimously called it sweet and everyone felt that the car was so attractive to yourself. I also found that most guys who saw the car thought it was cool enough to list their economy cars that are cool enough of their own. Outside the car has a lot to him, and Ford uses the style of interesting colors on the sides of the Fiesta.
My test car Candy Red Metallic is one of the more mundane colors, you can get clear and bright colors such as lime and yellow, and if you want something else. Leather in my test car is called a black cashmere and leather. Almost everyone who looked at the interior called it white, it is very clear and places around the pipe was black. The interior looks really cool, but the light color of the seats can accommodate up to life with children. Two front seats on my tester miał spots, which appear to be transferred from people who ran it before him wearing dark jeans. If you buy a Fiesta in the light skin, youll want to be very careful and if the dealer offers a package of security patches, you will definitely want to consider it.
Ford spent some time inside the sculpture to the car and it shows in the project. Dash is black with many silver trim and the buttons light up orange. The steering wheel has radio controls and cruise control. Sync voice activation on the Fiesta is not it? T on the wheel, as it was on all other Ford vehicles I tested. Sync button on the stalk is the voice signal, which is a bit inconvenient. I usually ended up accidentally turning on bright lights try to activate Sync. I would like to see the button placed on the steering wheel, where it will be easier to access. Display information about the Fiesta is on the dashboard and the hood has a rounded top. The screen is recessed enough that it is easy to see even in bright sunlight.
Most controls the radio and in-car entertainment system are arranged in a cool, V-shape below the information screen. The buttons are large and clearly visible in all lighting conditions. In the center of the control array is a large knob style D-pad, you can use to navigate the menu, the radio system. Below is a volume knob and a few other knobs. To the right of this section is a row of buttons direct access to radio stations and other materials.
HVAC controls are at the bottom of the center console just before transmission. These controls are very easy to use and intuitive. Lock and unlock the door is under the control of the radio and requires some getting used. After years of driving cars, where are the keys to lock the door to it on the dashboard takes some getting used. Overall, the interior is very comfortable to drive short and long term.
Fiesta is a four-door car and the amount of the interior of your car does? T seems to go with the small dimensions of the car. I loaded his wife and two children in the car and headed off to do some shopping at the Fiesta and the school had a lot of space. My wife is what you call the power shopper, so a months salary, and five large bags later we were back in the pack Fiesta all away in the trunk, and surprisingly it all fits. This car will have plenty of room for the average family of four. Fiesta hatchback version has a few blind spots behind the passengers, which are used to.
The car is small and lightweight and small 1.6l engine with 120hp and 112 produces ft.-lb. torque. All that really matters is that the engine offers a lot of pep for driving fun and get you to move without any problem. Ti-VCT 1.6l engine is quiet at highway cruising speed, but it is a growl when accelerating. When driving from 75 mph on the freeway, the car is turning almost 3000 rpm, which given the car is a 6-speed auto seems to be high. The car continues to crush everything else I have running on fuel consumption though. I racked up less fuel assessment process, in accordance with on-board computer 28mpg in the city and the highway on a flight from 1970 to 1975 mph netted me quite an impressive 38mpg. Driving the Fiesta car for a lower price. It has surprisingly agile handling, fun car that will make the corners. I suspect that the Fiesta will be lots of fun on the autocross track.
small car market in the U.S., there are plenty of deals here, and frankly most of them are ugly. I look at you Toyota Yaris. Fiesta is an attractive car is clearly aimed at the car driver, who wanted a cost in the purchase price and how much fuel consumed. At the same time, the car is clearly aimed at seeking the driver of the vehicle and the personality of a vehicle that can dress them for their personality. In 2011, Ford Fiesta has a lot of accessories that buyers can receive directly from Ford, including tool kits and other items to their Fiesta exactly what they want it to be.

HTC Droid Incredible

HTC Droid Incredible

Motorola Droid owners now have a reason to be jealous. Verizon’s third and arguably best vgp-bps8 Droid handset is the HTC Droid Incredible, an Android 2.1 powered device with an updated version of HTC’s Sense interface. The Incredible sports a sleek black-and-red design, an optical trackpad in lieu of a trackball, and a brilliant, 3.7-inch 480 x 800 AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. If that isn’t enough, the Incredible comes with a 1-GHz Snapdragon processor, a sharp 8-MP cameraand tethering capabilities right out of the box (take that, iPhone). While we have some complaints, and the 9 price will be too steep for some, overall the Incredible is one sweet smart phon

Design

The Incredible is a gorgeous, black phone with red accents (signifying its ties to Verizon). It measures 4.6 x 2.3 x 0.5 inches, making it quite pocketable and thin, and it weighs 4.6 ounces. That’s significantly lighter than the Motorola Droid (6 ounces) but the same weight as the GSM version of thefelt light enough that we sometimes didn’t notice it in our pocket. Up top you’ll find a 3.5mm headset jack and the power button, which serves as a sleep/wake button when the phone is turned on. The right side of the device is clean and devoid of any buttons, the left houses a micro-USB port and a volume rocker.vgp-bps9s a large, red 8MP camera with a dual LED flash sitting on a backplate with an odd, terraced design that looks like a topographical vgp-bps13. We wondered whether the ridges and raises were just an arbitrary design feature, but when you remove the HTC emblazoned battery cover, you’ll find that they’re there because of the phone’s internals. You’ll also be hit with more red than you’ve ever seen on a device as both the insidLED , and search touch buttons, all of which haptic feedback. The most noticeable design change versus the Nexus One is that iping through screens, icons, and general navigation. When you want to select an item, you just press down on it like you would a trackball. We did find the trackpad to be a little too recessed; also, it felt awkwardacross it because we could feel the edges around the trackpad. Sometimes it wouldn’t register our gestures.

Display

Whmay prefer the huge 4.3-inch display on the HD2, the Incredible has plenty of real estate for surfing the We running the latest Android Apps, as well as plenty of resolution (800 x 480). Plus, even though the ncredible has the same screen size and resolution screen as the Nexus One, when compared side-by-side the Incredible seems to be richer in color and contrast. The auto-brightness function worked well during most lighting condition changes, and it’s also easy to see the screen in bright sunlight (though direct sunlight causes too much glare). T

On-Screen Keyboard

he soft keyboards on the Motorola Cliq XT or Backflip, the Incredible’s keyboard let us fly. The auto-correct feature was fairly accurate and helped us save time, although we found that the space bar occasionally didn’t register our input–a problem we’ve had with other Android handsets. Overall, typing on the Incredible keyboard was a pleasant enough experience that we had no problem texting or e-mailing our friends and colleagues regularly. Yes, some may prefer the Droid’s physical keyboard, but that flat layout is one of the few things we don’t like about Motorola’s handset.
